Hand Baggage Restrictions - Liquids

Most countries limit the amount and types of liquid you can carry in your hand baggage.

You can usually pack liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your hand baggage, but each item must be in a container no bigger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres), all of which must be packed in a sealable quart-sized (20 cm x 20 cm), clear plastic bag. This must be screened separately from the rest of your hand baggage.

You must pack anything more than this in your checked baggage. These rules do not apply for medications accompanied by a doctor’s prescription, or for baby food and drink.

You can also purchase liquids once you are through security. Duty free items must be packed in a sealed, secure, and tamper-evident bag, with the receipt inside.

We recommend that you check with your departure airport before travelling.

Checked-in baggage should not include items listed in note 3 and LIAT accepts no liability for such items

LIAT does not have interline baggage agreements with any other carriers currently. Therefore, LIAT’s baggage rules will be applied for anyone flying on the airline.

  • In person before leaving the airport
  • At the latest, within 24 hours after you receive your bag for domestic itineraries
  • Within 7 days for international connected passengers

Please notify us as soon as possible. Failure to report damage to baggage within the prescribed time limit releases LIAT Airlines from any liability.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Inspections at USVI and Puerto Rico

The TSA places a written notification inside the bag or a seal on the outside of the bag after an inspection. Since LIAT is not liable for damage resulting from TSA inspections, please contact the TSA at 1-866-289-9673 if you believe your bag has been damaged as a result of an inspection.

Tips To Help Reduce the Risk of Damaged Luggage

  1. Never check a bag that does not completely close. If you need a luggage strap or bungee cord to keep the bag closed, it probably will not survive the trip.
  3. Check your bag carefully in the baggage claims area before leaving the airport.
  4. Never check a bag that is meant to be carried on. Most briefcases, tote bags, plastic garment covers, and items received through retail promotions are not designed to be checked luggage.
  5. Do not over-pack. Over-packing puts a strain on zippers, seams, frames, and hinges.
  6. Consider replacing old or worn luggage. Luggage that is several years old may not be able to withstand automated baggage handling systems.

Damage to Baggage/Clothing

LIAT does not assume liability for normal wear and tear to checked baggage. Normal wear and tear being minor scratches, scuffs, stains, dents, cuts, and dirt that may occur despite care in handling. There is also no responsibility for damage to or loss of protruding baggage parts such as wheels, straps, pockets, pull handles, zips, zippers, seams, hanger hooks or other items attached to the baggage.

LIAT employees strive to ensure you and your checked baggage are always transported on the same flight(s). However, many factors - including weather, delays of connecting flights and Weight Restrictions on the Aircraft can make this task challenging.

For those times when you are separated from your baggage, we will do our best to ensure you are reunited with your bags as quickly as possible.

Because external baggage tags can sometimes be damaged or detached, we strongly encourage you to also place a tag with similar information inside your bag to facilitate identification.
