LIAT launches new stop service between Barbados and Tortola

Bridgetown, Barbados - June 23rd, 2016

LIAT created history on Wednesday June 1st when it inaugurated its new non-stop service between its hub in Barbados and Beef Island, Tortola, BVI.

Arriving to a traditional water cannon salute, flight LI300 - operated with the 48-seater ATR42-600 aircraft - taxied into the gate ten minutes ahead of the scheduled arrival time at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, having departed the Grantley Adams International Airport on-time at 1210pm.

The new service which will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the current summer schedule between the two islands, seeks to link the northern and southern Caribbean islands and offer more flexibility and easy transfers.

Underscoring the need for this direct flight, Head of Sales and Marketing at the regional carrier, Egbert Riley noted that the introduction of this service reduces the numbers of stops that it would take for persons travelling from Ogle in Guyana, for example, to Tortola.

Mr Riley also stated that LIAT and the BVI Tourist Board would be collaborating and creating new synergies to promote the new flight and the British Virgin Islands as a destination of choice. Mr Riley said that “This route is necessary and needed. We did some research and recognized that this is the market we need to be present in.” This commitment on LIAT’s part to providing more airlift is also borne out with the re-introduction on the evening service from Antigua and St Maarten, the two together offering an additional 500 plus seats into and out of the Tortola market – an increase of 18%, with daily frequencies into Beef Island increasing from 3 in the previous schedule to 4 or 5 - depending on the day of operation in the current schedule which will end in December.

LIAT flight 300 departs at 12:10pm and arrives in Beef Island, Tortola at 2:25pm. The return service, flight LI301 departs at 2:55pm arriving in Barbados at 5:05pm.
