ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, October 16, 2009 – Regional air carrier LIAT today marks 53 years of continuous service to the people and countries of the eastern Caribbean with a call from Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brian Challenger for employees to work together to take the company to higher levels of positive achievement in all aspects.
“While there should be justifiable pride and joy in attaining this milestone, this is no time for us to rest on our laurels,” Mr. Challenger said.
“As we look to the future let us all strive therefore to be professional and committed to this company which has played such an important role in our region’s development.
The Acting CEO said that LIAT, like the rest of the airline industry, was not spared the effects of the ongoing global economic crisis but that the company remains committed to serving the region.
“The present world economic downturn has adversely affected travel throughout the world and LIAT has been no exception. This year LIAT has seen significant declines in passenger volume and revenues,” Mr. Challenger explained.
“Although we have been able to hold our own to date – future success will require a commitment by all LIAT employees to improving service quality levels and efficiency and to reducing operating costs.”
This year is also significant for LIAT as it represents 50 years since the company established its headquarters in Antigua as well as 50 years since it hired its first flight attendant.
“No one can doubt the important contribution which LIAT has made to Antigua’s social and economic development during these past 50 years, or the contribution that our flight attendants have made in enhancing safety and customer service over the years,” Mr. Challenger said.
Several activities have been planned to commemorate the company’s 53rd birthday. These include doubling the birthday celebrations with a Customer Appreciation Day.
On Sunday, October 18, employees will join with the congregation at the Spring Garden Moravian Church in Antigua at 9:00am in a service of thanksgiving.
